Final Project

Based on the types of consumers that use a companies products and services, products and services fall into two classes – Consumer products and industrial products. “Consumer products are products and services bought by final consumers for personal consumption.” p. 211 Marketing an Introduction Armstrong/Kotler. Company’s market products differently according to the way consumers buy them, such as, convenience products. Which is defined as a consumer product that customers usually buy frequently, immediately, and with a minimum of comparison and buying effort.  Or shopping products: A consumer product that the customer usually compares on such basses as suitability, quality, price, and style. There is also specialty products which are, consumer products with unique characteristics or brand identification for which a significant group of buyers is willing to make a special purchase effort. Lastly, there are unsought products. Defined as: A consumer product that the consumer either does not know about or knows about but does not normally think of buying. Industrial products are products bought by individuals and organizations for further processing or for use in conducting business. The distinction being based on the purpose for which the product is bought. “If a consumer buys a lawn mower for use around home, the lawn mower is a consumer product. If the same consumer buys the same lawn mower for use in a landscaping business, the lawn mower is an industrial product.”  p. 212 Marketing an Introduction Armstrong/Kotler. The three groups of industrial products and services include materials and parts, capital items, and supplies and services.  Industry uses manufactured materials, and parts and are sold directly to the industrial users. Branding and advertising tend to be less important than price and services for industry. Capitol items are defined as industrial products that aid in the buyer’s production or operation. Capitol items are things such as fixed equipment like forklifts, or buildings, desks, and escalators. Or, major purchases like office buildings or warehouses. Supplies and services are also in the industrial products group and they consist of things like office supplies, maintenance and repair services or consulting services or advertising, which are usually under contract.

Final project

When defining a product or service, we will look at the broader definitions of the terms product and service.  A product is defined as: anything that can be offered to a market for attention, acquisition, use, or consumption that might satisfy a want or need. For example, food is a product because you consume the product. A tennis racket is a product because you acquire it.  A service on the other hand, is a form of a product that consists of activities, benefits, or satisfaction offered for sale that is essentially intangible and does not result in the ownership of anything. For example, banking is a service because it you do not end up owning a bank, you receive the service of a bank. A hotel is a service because you receive the service of a good nights sleep – you don’t end up owning anything. The same goes for airlines, search engines, the post office, and schools. A company’s market offering often includes a combination of both a tangible product and delivering a valuable service. “Companies that market experiences realize that customers are really buying much more than just products and services. They are buying what those offers will do foe them” p. 210 Marketing an Introduction Armstrong/Kotler. Zappos is a good example of a company combining both product and service. They are creating value through exceptional customer service by managing the customer’s experience as well as selling them shoes.

Products and services can be thought of on three different levels. The first level, core customer value, addresses the question what is the buyer really buying? Marketers must first define the core, problem - solving benefits or services that consumers seek. The second level product planners must turn to the core benefit into an actual product. Companies need to develop product and service features, design, a quality level, a brand name, and packaging. “For example, the BlackBerry is an actual product. Its name, parts, styling, features, packaging, and other attributes have all been combined carefully to deliver the core customer value of staying connected.” p. 211 Marketing an Introduction Armstrong/Kotler.. Lastly, companies must build an augmented product around the core benefit and actual product by offering additional customer services and benefits.

Week 6 EOC Me x 3

Week 6 EOC Me X 3

3 things I buy for myself and why do I buy them.

Item 1 - I buy my own deodorant. Why do I buy my own deodorant? Because I don't like the smell of most deodorant. I like a manly smell, not flowery, not perfumy, not cologney, I like other smells like a wooded forest or the smell of leather, or even the smell of a new car. Not that I want to smell like a new car, but if I were to guess - women like the smell of a new car. I like the smell of a new car. Heck, I like new cars.

The other Item I purchase myself is beer. My wife doesn't know what kind of beer I like. she doesn't even drink beer.I buy foreign beer because I think it tastes better. I mostly prefer Mexican or German style Pilsners. I also buy my own liquor - not that I drink a lot, but again, I have particular taste and my wife doesn't know those tastes, nor does she care.

I also buy my own cloths. My wife will buy some things, but for the most part, I buy most of my cloths. She say's I'm hard to buy for but I don't think so.

Oddly enough, I actual buy most of the things in our household. I picked my car, I picked most of what we eat. My wife chooses things like, the interior of the house, her own cloths, her own car.

I hadn't thought about it much, but I guess I pick out most of the items we use for the household.

wk 5 EOC Sony Sleuth-Marketing

Sony's breech of information has millions of people wondering if they are going to be victim to a future theft.

“Now 77 million people are busy changing their passwords, cancelling their credit cards and worrying about identity theft.”

The obligation companies have to their customers to protect the costumers personal information might be greater than any obligation a company has. Sony has a to win back the confidence of their most loyal customers - those who chose to give them their personal information.

Picture this, 100 million people scrambling to change their personal information at the exact same time. That’s what people have been forced into doing.

“Now 77 million people are busy changing their passwords, cancelling their credit cards and worrying about identity theft.”

“the stolen data includes customer names, e-mail addresses and hashed versions of their account passwords. That data could be used to spam customers or trick them with phishing e-mails.”

Other companies that have the same weakness in their security system should be very worried about the “Legion”. Legion was the only sign Sony had that they had been hacked.

An interesting twist to the story is that Sony US unit claimed that the hackers tried to blackmail Sony, threatening to sell the information unless they paid them ransom money.  Although, a Sony spokesman said, that they were not approached by the hackers to purchase the information.

"To my knowledge there is no truth to this report of a list, or that Sony was offered an opportunity to purchase the list," Sony spokesman Patrick Seybold said in a statement.

Separately, Sony's U.S. unit said Monday reports the hackers had tried to blackmail the company by selling millions of allegedly stolen credit card numbers back were untrue.
